On Wednesday afternoon at Warrior Field theBrother Rice Warriors (9-1-1, 8-0) Shutout the Catholic Central Shamrocks in both games of a CHSL doubleheader 7-0 & 6-0. The Warriors compiled 22 hits on the afternoon compared to CC’s 9. Brother Rice was led offensively by(Junior LF) Alex Malzone who was 4-for-4 on the day with a Home Run, 2 doubles, and 2 walks. He scored 4 Runs on the day and drove in 3.
In Game #1 Brother Rice took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd on (Senior RF) Randy Righter’s 2nd Home Run of the season. The 2-run shot to Left Field gave the Warriors an early advantage. Rice scored 3 more in the 3rd, highlighted by RBI-singles from (Junior CF) Nick Plummer, (Senior SS) Freddie Jehle, and Randy Righter. The scoring was capped off in the 5th inning for Brother Rice when Alex Malzone launched his 2nd Home Run of the season: a Line-drive over the fence in deep Left-Center Field to make the score 7-0.
(Senior RHP) Matt Ruppenthal completely dominated for the 3rd straight time this season. He tossed 5 Innings, allowing 4 Hits, and 0 Runs while striking out 8. He has now thrown 14 Innings for Rice this season without allowing a Run and has struck out 28 batters compared to just 2 walks. His individual record stands at 3-0.
In Game #2 Randy Righter earned his 2nd victory of the season. He threw 5 Innings, allowed 3 Hits, 0 Runs, and struck out 4 batters. In the meantime, his teammates gave him plenty of offensive support: Alex Malzone went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Nick Plummer had a pair of doubles as well. It was Plummer’s 8th and 9th extra base hits of the young season.(Sophomore OF) Preston Pilat slammed his team-leading 3rd Home Run of the year as he went 2-for-3 on the day with a pair of RBI’s.
The Warriors are currently hitting .358 on the season as a team, with a .481 On-Base%. Their 8-0 start in the Catholic League matches their best start in the last 5 years.
